Legislature could dash cops’ practice of taking cash

TNReport.com takes a look at a proposal that would restrict the practice of “policing for profit,” which allows law enforcement to seize property, including cash, even though no crime has been committed. The article cites Beacon’s recent policy brief on the topic, The Perils of Policing for Profit.

“Guilty until proven innocent,” is how the Nashville-based Beacon Center of Tennessee describes the situation. “Under current Tennessee law, no standard of probable cause is required to seize and hold private property – a hunch is all it takes.”
