Staff Attorney Position

September 25, 2015 2:39PM

The Beacon Center is Tennessee’s premier free market public policy organization. Beacon is pound for pound the most effective and efficient state-level think tank on the planet. With a staff of just nine, Beacon has achieved remarkable policy victories that have empowered Tennesseans to reclaim control of their lives. Our recent accomplishments include:

  • Repealing the state death tax and phasing out the Hall Income Tax, becoming just the second state in history to eliminate an income tax. These tax cuts have cumulatively saved taxpayers more than $2.5 billion to date.
  • Enacting the nation’s fourth education savings account program, Tennessee’s first private school choice program.
  • Blocking an unaffordable and immoral expansion of Medicaid under Obamacare…twice.
  • Advancing free market healthcare reforms, including direct primary care, an overhaul of Tennessee’s certificate of need laws, Medicaid work requirements, and Right to Try.
  • Helping usher in the nation’s first Right to Earn a Living Act to bring about occupational licensing reform, and successfully repealing multiple licensing laws.
  • Establishing a high profile and broad-based coalition to advance sensible criminal justice reforms.

As a result of our efforts, thousands of Tennesseans can now realize the American Dream. But we’re still not satisfied, and we won’t be until Tennessee becomes and remains the freest, most prosperous state in the nation.

That’s why we are looking for new talent. Beacon seeks a Staff Attorney who will help take our organization—and the freedom of our fellow Tennesseans—to the next level. The Staff Attorney is responsible for litigating on behalf of the Beacon Center Legal Foundation and its clients in the name of liberty; assisting the Vice President of Legal Affairs in executing all Center litigation and legal efforts; coordinating amicus curiae briefs; advising the Center’s leadership on in-house legal matters; and assisting the Center’s senior staff in carrying out their responsibilities.

The Staff Attorney will serve as Beacon’s second full-time litigator in our growing litigation arm and will work with and report directly to our Vice President of Legal Affairs.

Beacon is a lean, innovative organization that operates like a start-up. We are not afraid to take risks and develop new ways to solve old problems. And neither should our Staff Attorney. He or she should have an entrepreneurial spirit and a high velocity of work, and be results-oriented, optimistic, and curious.

We believe that the principles of free markets, individual liberty, and limited government are the foundation of a prosperous and opportunity-laden society. So our Staff Attorney must believe in and abide by these core principles.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Conduct pro bono litigation on behalf of Tennesseans whose constitutional rights have been violated.
  • Identify, vet, and prepare clients for potential litigation, with a particular emphasis on local property rights issues.
  • Prepare cases for full vetting and approval by the Center’s senior leadership team and Board of Directors.
  • Review, approve, and draft amici curiae briefs for filing on matters directly related to the Center’s mission.
  • Work on the intersection of legal and policy formation in the areas of economic liberty, property rights, and government transparency, among others.
  • Advise the Center’s senior leadership team and Board of Directors on legal matters.
  • Assist the CEO and Vice President of Legal Affairs in executing and eventually managing all in-house legal matters.

Required Experience:

  • Juris Doctor from accredited school of law
  • License to practice law in Tennessee (or be prepared to sit for Tennessee bar exam in February 2019)
  • Affinity for liberty and free market principles

Preferred Experience:

  • 3-5 years of litigation experience, preferably in the field of public interest law
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Understanding of public policy and knowledge of political processes
  • Experience managing nonprofit or corporate in-house legal matters is a plus
