JOBS & INTERNSHIPS

Chief Operating Officer & Executive Vice President

The Beacon Center is Tennessee’s premier free market policy and public interest litigation organization. Beacon is pound for pound the most effective state-level think tank on the planet. Beacon has achieved remarkable victories that have empowered Tennesseans to reclaim and protect their freedoms. Our recent accomplishments include:

  • Repealing the state death tax and Hall Income Tax, becoming just the second state in history to eliminate an income tax. These tax cuts have cumulatively saved taxpayers more than $5 billion to date.
  • Bringing universal school choice to families all across Tennessee.
  • Leading the effort to enshrine right-to-work in the Tennessee Constitution, an amendment that passed with 70% of the vote in 2022.
  • Advancing free market healthcare reforms, including direct primary care, an overhaul of Tennessee’s certificate of need laws, Medicaid work requirements, and a Right to Try Law that allows terminally ill patients to access life-saving treatments.
  • Helping usher in the nation’s first Right to Earn a Living Act to bring about occupational licensing reform and successfully repealing multiple licensing laws.
  • Winning numerous lawsuits protecting Tennesseans’ economic liberty and property rights, including a case cited by the U.S. Supreme Court expanding property rights protections nationwide.

More than 5.4 million Tennesseans have directly benefited from our work. But we’re still not satisfied, and we won’t be until Tennessee becomes and remains the freest, most prosperous state in the nation.

That’s why we are looking for new talent. Beacon seeks a Chief Operating Officer & Executive Vice President (COO/EVP) who will help take our organization—and the freedom of our fellow Tennesseans—to the next level. The COO/EVP will partner with Beacon’s CEO to advance our strategic mission and execute on that mission by running our day-to-day operations and that of our advocacy partner, Beacon Impact.

Beacon is a lean, innovative organization that operates like a start-up. We are not afraid to take risks and develop new ways to solve old problems. Our COO/EVP must therefore be mission driven, results oriented, empathetic, and self-motivated. He or she must excel at building and managing teams and place a high value on organizational culture.

Beacon operates in a hybrid work environment with a headquarters in Nashville. While the COO/EVP does not need to be in the office every day, he or she must live in the broader Nashville area.

We believe that the principles of free markets, individual liberty, and limited government are the foundation of a prosperous and opportunity-laden society. Our COO/EVP must believe in and abide by these core principles.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the CEO’s business partner, working together to build capacities and strategies to advance Beacon’s mission.
  • Oversee all day-to-day operations aimed at advancing that mission for both Beacon and our 501(c)(4) advocacy partner, Beacon Impact. In addition to the daily execution of our strategy, this will include oversight of personnel, financial, and operational decisions.
  • Build, launch, and oversee projects that are aimed at making Tennessee the best place to live, work, and raise a family.
  • Serve as Beacon’s chief people officer by supervising the senior leadership team and helping them manage their direct reports, as well as be the keeper of our culture to ensure we live out our Core Values daily.
  • Partner with the CEO to develop a team of top-notch freedom fighters and equip them with the tools to do their jobs effectively, building a deep bench of organizational talent.
  • Expand Beacon’s ability to execute its mission by growing our donor base of individual, foundation, and corporate investors.
  • Assist the CEO with Board engagement, including serving as Secretary of both Beacon and Beacon Impact.
  • Occasionally conduct public-facing work such as media interviews, speaking events, opinion articles, and other external communications.

Preferred Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • 5+ years directly leading or managing teams
  • Executive, management, operations, or human resources background
  • In-depth understanding of and respect for free market principles
  • Experience working for a state or national public policy or public interest litigation organization is a plus
